A New Russian Play to premier on Valentine's Day

9th February 2012

Couples staying in top hotels in London will have the chance to enjoy the new black comedy A Russian Play, when it opens in the capital on Valentine's Day.

The John Thompson production will receive its world premier at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre on Tuesday 14th February and is scheduled to go on until Sunday March 4th.

A  Russian Play is based on the era of Russia's tumultuous Bolshevik Revolution. The story commences in the winter of 1916 in a cold and dingy room located at the top of a slum dwelling, where two friends are hiding from their landlord.

The two friends are both out of money so in desperation, they finally decide to rent out one of their beds to a stranger. However, in doing this, the two friends encounter unforeseen circumstances.

A New Russian Play has been described as Withnail & I meets Crime and Punishment and is directed by David Salter, whose previous stage credits include Broadway in the Shadows at the Arcola Theatre, the Life of Galileo at the Battersea Arts Centre, Ghetto at the Pleasance Theatre and Playing Sinatra at the New End Theatre.

The production features a talented cast, including Tom Kanji (Twelfth Night, Ludlow Festival; Wild Horses, Theatre 503; The Tempest, Arts Theatre), Dan Percival (Hitting Town) and Will Rodell (South Riding).

A Russian Play also features Harry Saks, whose previous stage credits include Romeo and Juliet at Westminster Theatre, Carnival War at the Royal Court and The Cherry Orchard at the Roundhouse.

David Salter, who is also an actor, worked as an associate director to Peter Stein on the West End Production of David Harrower's Blackbird at the Albery Theatre, and has also worked as an associate at the Almeida Theatre.

Salter is a permanent member of the faculty at Manchester Metropolitan University's school of theatre and is also a director at a number of drama schools including the Drama Centre.
