African art and design focus of new London exhibition

21st November 2012

The Victoria & Albert Museum in London is hosting a new exhibition celebrating African art since the 1850s.

Over 100 items are being included in the show which could appeal to those staying in central London hotels over the coming months.

Open until February 3rd 2013, the Exploring Hidden Histories event includes a number of varied exhibits ranging from jewellery, textiles and sculpture to explore the development of art in the continent.

The free exhibition has the backing of the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as the Arts and Humanities Research Council and includes many pieces from the museum's own collection as well as pieces on loan from other institutions.

One of the highlights is expected to be a series of monochrome photographs taken by Walker Evans in 1935 of the Museum of Modern Art in New York's first African art exhibition.

Visitors will also be able to see excerpts from Athol Fugard's play The Island (2000) and a number of photographs by artists such as Zanele Muholi and Santu Mofokeng.

The Victoria & Albert Museum is also hosting a special event looking at work from photographers from the Middle East that will run until April 7th next year.

Over 90 images are included in the Light from the Middle East: New Photography show at the museum's Porter Gallery, which aims to highlight the breadth of creative talent from the region.

Marta Weiss, curator of the exhibition, added: "In the past few years contemporary photographic practice from and about the Middle East has been some of the most exciting, innovative and varied art anywhere in the world. The exhibition will celebrate the creative and sophisticated ways that contemporary artists use photography to respond to the complexities of the Middle East."

The Victoria & Albert Museum is near to South Kensington London Underground station on the Piccadilly, Circle and District lines.
