Discover art, outdoor activities and more at the Serpentine this summer

6th August 2014

The Serpentine in Hyde Park is always a great place to be during the summer months, with plenty of cultural activities taking place on and around this picturesque body of water in the heart of London.

For instance, if you fancy a peaceful day out then going boating on the lake itself is a terrific idea, with both pedalos and rowing boats available until 8pm throughout the summer months. There's even a section of the Serpentine that's reserved for swimming, which is perfect for cooling off when the weather's hot, while two fantastic cafes can also be found along the water's edge.

Relaxing with a cup of tea or coffee and watching the world go by from the shore of the Serpentine is a great way to soak up the incredible atmosphere that only London can offer during the summer.

However, there's much more to discover here besides the water itself, with both the Serpentine Gallery and the Serpentine Sackler Gallery being among the top venues for art in the capital.

This summer, for instance, the Serpentine Gallery is hosting a live performance art installation by Montenegrin American artist Marina Abramovic, who first rose to international acclaim with her 2010 piece The Artist is Present at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Her current work, entitled 512 Hours, sees audience members come face to face with the artist in an empty room, resulting in a series of unique interactions in which the public becomes an integral part of the performance.

The installation is free to attend and entry is allocated on a first come first served basis. It will remain on show at the Serpentine Gallery until August 25th.

What's more, this year's Serpentine Pavilion has been created by Chilean architect Smiljan Radic, and marks the 14th consecutive year that an international artist has been invited to build a temporary structure on the shore of the lake.

Open until October 19th, the 2014 pavilion has been created to resemble a shell resting on giant boulders, and contains a café.

Located in the heart of Hyde Park, the Serpentine can be reached in just a few short minutes from the Montcalm London Marble Arch.
