Done the West End? Visit Stratford

6th January 2014

London's West End will forever be the main attraction for tourists to the capital, with this region of the city being famous for its incredible array of shops, theatres, historic landmarks and more.

However, if you're a regular visitor to London and feel like branching out a little next time you're in town, you may want to consider paying Stratford a visit.

Located in east London, this part of the city was once unfashionable and barely worth a mention, although things have changed dramatically in recent years, largely thanks to the huge regeneration efforts that took place in the area in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.

Accessible by the London Overground, Docklands Light Railway and the Central Line on the tube, Stratford can be reached in next to no time from the centre of London, and is home to an array of excellent attractions.

Among these is the Olympic Park itself, where you'll find a number of venues that were used to host events during the Games. The Olympic Stadium, for example, was the scene for many of Team GB's greatest victories, such as the gold medals won by the likes of Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah.

The complex is also home to the Veldrome and Aquatic Centre, as well as the UK's largest piece of public art, the stunning ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower. Standing at 115 m high, the tower offers amazing views across the London skyline and is one of the only place in the east of the city where this type of vista can be enjoyed.

If sport isn't your thing then you may be interested to hear that Stratford is also one of the best places in London to go shopping, with the Westfield Shopping Centre being one of the largest in Europe. Here, you'll find all the high street stores as well as a huge selection of cafes, restaurants and entertainment options such as a bowling alley, casino and cinema.
