Enjoy family fun in Dalston this bank holiday

1st May 2013

The May bank holiday, which falls on May 6th this year, is just a matter of days away. Those spending the long weekend in London will have plenty to see and do, including no end of events and festivals to attend - and those with families should definitely consider paying a visit to the Land of Kids Festival.

This brand new event is organised by the people behind the similarly-named Land of Kings Festival, an annual music and arts showcase that takes place in Dalston. Land of Kings celebrates its fifth year in 2013 and, in addition to the usual gigs, film screenings and theatrical performances, organisers have commemorated the occasion by establishing a family-friendly spin-off.

With events taking place across various venues and outdoor spaces in Dalston, the Land of Kids Festival promises to bring "a world of curiosities to Dalston's doorstep". It takes place on bank holiday monday, and its eclectic and exciting programme should offer something for all tastes and ages.

Crafty youngsters can participate in a host of workshops where they'll be introduced to a vast range of different activities. These include decorating pearly hats, building a cardboard kingdom and flower seed bombing - where more adventurous, green-thumbed festival-goers can build seed bombs under the supervision of a 'guerrilla gardener'.

There are more educational diversions too, including a 'coffee compositing' workshop where visitors can learn how to effectively recycle their waste coffee grinds.

Kigu's Pop Up Zoo is sure to be popular, giving children a chance to come face to face with their favourite zoo animals and even pet them.

There will be face-painting from Squiggles and Wiggles, which organisers claim is "like having Picasso give you a manicure", along with delicious food for hungry guests from the Street Feast market.

Dalston is a pleasant spot in the heart of Hackney and easy to reach for those staying in central london hotels. The festival kicks off at 12pm and runs until 7pm.
