Experience the Tropics at Kew

6th February 2012

Nature lovers will soon be rushing to luxury London hotels to take in the bright sights and fragrant environments of Kew Garden's new Tropical Extravaganza.

Ideal for those in central London hotels looking to take in a bit of greenery while enjoying the attractions of the Big Smoke, the garden invites people to "ignite your senses".

"Tropical Extravaganza is a celebration of all things bright, beautiful, and, of course, tropical," explained organisers.

"See amazing displays of tropical plants and flowers against the lush green backdrop of the Princess of Wales Conservatory."

With entrance charged at nearly £14 for adults but nothing for children, the display is built around the theme "forces of nature" and takes inspiration from the colours of fire, wind, water and earth.

It will do this by showcasing bright flowers that exhibit an array of vibrant colours, while those looking to learn more will be taught how each species relies on a delicate balance of the elements to survive.

The fire display will use bright red plants of various tones to startling effect, such as an archway that appears to be made of flames.

Air will be represented by mood-lifting bright orchids, while water displays boast a red mangrove section and a simulated Caribbean habitat and earth is depicted by rare fungi, which inspired the work of sculptor Emma Garofalo.

The artist's work will also be on display, with Ms Garofalo having met with expert botanists for the inspiration behind her sculptures.

Furthermore, visitors can go on tours of the site's tropical plant nursery and see experts bring to life rare and hard-to-maintain specimens.

"Explore the fascinating carnivorous, bromeliad, orchid and cacti zones with Kew's expert guides," the group commented.

"Learn about the nursery's conservation work, then meet Kew's horticultural experts afterwards for a Q&A session."

The tours take place every Sunday while the Tropical Extravaganza remains open until March 4th.
