London in the movies

23rd October 2013

The 2013 London Film Festival is now over, and the red carpet has been rolled up for another year – although that's not to say that there isn't any more movie magic to experience while visiting the capital.

In fact, the city is steeped in cinematic history, and as well as being home to a huge number of classic movie theatres – such as the Prince of Wales Cinema in Leicester Square – it has also featured in many films as well.

Taking a sightseeing tour of London is always worthwhile as it enables you to learn all about the history of this great city, although movie fans will also be thrilled to learn that many of the landmarks to be found here have also provided the backdrop to famous scenes on screen.

Take Westminster Bridge for example. This is one of the most popular spots among tourists in the capital as it offers first-class views of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, as well as the London Eye and many other attraction along the South Bank.

However, while it may often be crawling with people, come here early in the morning when the bridge is deserted and you may well recognise it from the role it played in Danny Boyle's 2002 flick 28 Days Later.

Elsewhere in the capital, Notting Hill is always a hit with film fanatics, and as everyone knows the area provided both the setting and the name for one of the most successful romantic comedies ever made.

Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts immortalised this area of West London in the 1999 film Notting Hill, and taking a stroll down Portobello Road on a Saturday afternoon when the market is in full flow is a great way to step into the movie itself.

Borough Market, meanwhile, has also appeared in films such as Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Bridget Jones's Diary.
