London's best indie cinemas

10th October 2013

With the weather in the UK being somewhat unreliable, it's a good thing that the capital is full of great things to do on a rainy day, and going to the cinema is one of these.

It goes without saying that all the latest releases can be seen in London, with mainstream cinema chains like Odeon and Vue having a number of branches throughout the city.

However, if you consider yourself a bit of a movie buff and like the idea of watching indie films - or if you've already seen all the latest blockbusters - then you'll be pleased to hear that London is also home to a large number of art house cinemas, where productions from all over the world can be seen.

Among these is Cine Lumiere, in the rather luxurious area of South Kensington. As part of the Institute Francais du Royaume-Uni, this establishment is a cultural hub for French expats in London, as well as Francophiles of all nationalities, and regularly shows the best modern and classic French films.

In addition, the venue also hosts screenings as part of a number of film festivals, including the London Spanish Film Festival, the UK Jewish Film Festival, the UK Iranian Film Festival and Film Africa - so if French cinema isn't your thing you'll still find plenty of other movies here from all over the world that are sure to tickle your fancy.

Heading across London to Dalston, the Rio Cinema is one of the most interesting movie theatres in the city. Famous for its iconic Art Deco exterior, this cinema shows a mix of current releases and classic films, with a healthy dose of foreign productions thrown in as well.

As it only has one screen, films tend to play for just one week at a time, so if there's nothing on offer that interests you on any given day, you won't have to wait long before something else is showing.

The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square is another great place to watch films that you won't find at mainstream venues, with this cinema having a reputation for showing cult classics.
