Middle Eastern photography exhibition continues in London

18th January 2013

A major exhibition at London's Victoria & Albert (V&A) museum is focusing on the work of several photographers from the region.

Light from the Middle East: New Photography includes images from established names such as Abbas from Iran, Youssef Nabil from Egypt and Walid Raad from Lebanon, as well as emerging photographers including Taysir Batniji from Palestine and Abdulnasser Gharem of Saudi Arabia.

Admission to the show is free and it is ideal for art fans staying in central London hotels over the coming months as the exhibition continues until April 7th.

Visitors will be able to see more than 90 images on display that capture some of the region's key political events such as last year's revolution in Egypt.

The show has been planned since 2009 and is being supported by a partnership between the British Museum, the V&A and the Art Fund.

Stephen Deuchar, Art Fund director, said: "Artists and photographers, as cultural commentators, are themselves amongst the agents of change. We much look forward to the exhibition which will showcase highlights from this important new collecting initiative."

Marta Weiss, curator of the exhibition, added: "In the past few years contemporary photographic practice from and about the Middle East has been some of the most exciting, innovative and varied art anywhere in the world. The exhibition will celebrate the creative and sophisticated ways that contemporary artists use photography to respond to the complexities of the Middle East."

The Victoria & Albert Museum is close to South Kensington London Underground station on the Piccadilly, Circle and District Lines. It is also located near to a number of other great attractions including the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum so could be an ideal destination for a cultural day trip.
