Olympic Flame captures the imagination in London

23rd July 2012

The Olympic torch has finally made it to the capital, with thousands turning out to see the flame go past some of the city's best-loved landmarks.

Over the past weekend, the official flame was carried through the streets of historic Greenwich Village as part of its 32 mile journey from Redbridge to Bexley.

However, it was the flame's brief detour that really captured the imagination of both local residents and sports fans who checked into central London hotels.

Prior to the relay, which saw 163 official torchbearers do their duty, the flame was taken to the South Bank for a ride on the London Eye.

Ameila Hempleman-Adams, who made history when she became the youngest person ever to ski to the North Pole, posed for the cameras on top of one of landmark's observation pods.

The young explorer then passed the flame onto a member of a south London Air Training Corps Squadron, who then carried on the relay south of the River Thames.

This won't be the only time the iconic London Eye captures the public imagination this summer.

As well as welcoming thousands of tourists enjoying stays in central London hotels, the observation wheel will be illuminated according to the mood of Olympics fans over the course of the 2012 Games.

Using feedback gathered from Twitter, the Eye will be the centrepiece of a spectacular South Bank light show every evening of the three-week period, with the exact colour of the lights varying according to how positive or negative the UK public feel towards Team GB's chances of winning medals.

Additionally, should a member of the home Olympics squad make it onto the podium, part of the light show will be coloured bronze, silver or gold, according to where the athletes finished in their respective events.
