Visit the Rooftop Film Club this summer
London is a real haven for film buffs, with Leicester Square's cinemas hosting some of the world's biggest premieres and the BFI and Barbican both holding high-profile screenings too. Those looking for a more unique viewing experience this summer, however, should check out the Queen of Hoxton - home to the Rooftop Film Club, which made a triumphant return to the venue earlier in the month.
This trendy Shoreditch destination is home to a bar, club and art gallery all year round, but its summer-long rooftop movie screenings are a particular pleasure. Guests are invited to recline in comfy seats with high-quality wireless headphones and "experience film like never before" on an impressively big screen.
Food and drink will be available, making this an all-round excellent way to appreciate the fresh air of a warm summer evening in the heart of the East End.
The Rooftop Film Club's programme this year is a satisfying cross-section of established favourites, cult classics and new releases. There's something to suit all tastes and with as many as five screenings every week, everyone should be able to catch a favourite or two.
For this weekend (May 18th and 19th), the Queen of Hoxton has a pair of real hits lined up. Robert Zemeckis' time travel caper Back to the Future is a perennial crowd-pleaser; meanwhile, audiences fresh from Baz Luhrmann's latest blockbuster The Great Gatsby can take a trip back in time themselves to revisit his 90s Leonardo DiCaprio collaboration, Romeo + Juliet.
The screening schedule for the next few weeks features plenty of treats too, including cult British comedy Withnail and I, John Hughes' much-loved Ferris Bueller's Day Off and 80s classic Top Gun.
Those staying in central London hotels should find the Queen of Hoxton easy to reach, being served by several tube and rail stations. In addition to the Shoreditch venue, Rooftop Film Club events will be held at the Roof Gardens in Kensington and the Bussey Building in Peckham Rye.
