Where to get the vintage look in London

9th January 2014

London has always been at the forefront of the fashion world, and its inhabitants are always setting the global trends. Ironically, however, the capital's clothing pioneers have been displaying a tendency to look back rather than forward in recent times, with vintage fashion becoming hugely popular in London of late. This is something which has spread to New York, LA and indeed worldwide, so if you want to remain at the cutting edge of fashion then you'll need to take a trip to London to pick up some vintage clothing.

There are a number of thrift stores and markets where you can browse through huge amounts of second-hand clothing, all of which has been expertly curated to produce retro outfits that are both chic and highly affordable.

Beyond Retro, for example, has three branches across the city – in Soho, Brick Lane and Dalston – and is a real place to see and be seen, while Absolute Vintage on Hanbury Street is another excellent shop selling all manner of clothes from the 1930s to the 1980s.

Many of London's markets are also getting in on the act, with the highly popular Camden Market and the nearby Stables Market containing an ever-increasing number of vintage clothes stalls, such as Lost'n'Found.

While the vintage craze may have started in the trendy neighbourhoods of east London – perhaps due to the large numbers of students and artists that live in this part of town, and their general need for affordable clothing – it has since spread to many of the capital's more up-market areas, including the West End. The fact that Rokit – arguably London's top second-hand store – now has a branch on Shelton Street, near Covent Garden, is testament to that, so if you happen to be browsing through the designer labels of central London, make sure you take the time to pop in and see what's on offer here.
