3 of the Best Theatres Near Marble Arch

London has been famous for its theatres for hundreds of years, and audiences flock from across the globe to sample the delights of London’s playhouses. From William Shakespeare to Agatha Christie, the joys of English plays and playwrights are world renowned. There are many theatres that have changed the course of London and British culture over the years, but we’ve selected a handful of must-visit places that are sure to delight and enthral audiences for years to come.

London’s Oldest

Shakespeare’s Globe theatre

Believe it or not there are two theatres who jostle for position as London’s oldest and most famous. Shakespeare’s Globe theatre couldn’t go unmentioned in a list of London theatres, however, if you’re looking for a historical theatre experience within a stone’s throw from Marble Arch, you have to choose the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane. The Theatre Royal lies exactly in between Montcalm Hotel London and Marble Arch, and is the perfect place to attend on your visit to our London boutique hotels.

A theatre has stood on its spot since roughly 1660, and as such it can boast more than 350 years of history and dramatics. There have to date been four iterations of this theatre; the latest version has lasted the longest, as it was built more than 200 years ago in 1812. The building is famous for its disastrous fires and mysterious hauntings. In fact, it’s said to be one of the most haunted buildings in London!

London’s Smallest

While the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane is famous for its big-name players, London’s smallest theatre is known for London’s smallest actors. The Puppet Theatre Barge currently resides in Little Venice, just a few streets and a pleasant walk away from Marble Arch and our beautiful London boutique hotels. This quaint little theatre began as a Marionette show in 1978 and has since delighted children and adults alike with its cosy interior, immersive storytelling and enchanting set and character designs.

With room for up to 50 people, and only one live actor on stage, the Puppet Theatre Barge offers a truly unique experience for anyone looking for something a little different.

London’s Prettiest

If an experience is what you’re looking for then London’s prettiest theatre is for you. Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre looks like something that has sprung to life straight from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and is the perfect place to while away a summer evening and enjoy nature while also taking in some of London’s most magical plays. The Theatre chooses performances which will lend themselves seamlessly to the open air experience, and shows performances for more mature audiences as well as family favourites.

There are many venues within the theatre which offer different ways to enjoy your time there; visitors are allowed to bring picnics, blankets and anything else that will ensure their evening is unforgettable. Regent’s Park is one of the most picturesque parts of London, well worth a trip from Montcalm Hotel and can be reached from Marble Arch with a half hour’s walk past pretty streets, shops, museums and parkland.

Whatever your preference, there is no shortage of amazing theatre productions to enjoy on your trip to the capital.
