There are always lots of great shows on offer in London, and this month is certainly no exception. The following recommendations should provide you with plenty of entertainment during your next stay in the city…
Harold Pinter Theatre
Until 1st June 2019
As one of the better-known works by famed British playwright Harold Pinter, this new production of Betrayal is sure to draw in theatre-loving crowds. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Zawie Ashton and Charlie Cox, the play details a seven-year affair. Pinter once stated that this is the only play of his which in any way resembled his own life, which should give audiences plenty of food for thought.
Betrayal will be playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre until June 2019, and delivers its storyline with a reversed chronological style which starts years after the end of the affair, and traces back to before its beginnings. The innovative approach to the material and appreciation for a play which dates back to 1978 shines through in both the staging and the performance. The last time this play took to the boards was in 2011, so this is a rare chance to see actors at the top of their game breathe new life into the material whilst you stay at the Montcalm London City.
Tate Modern
2nd June 2019
Taking a step away from the stuffy, conservative attitudes which sometimes pervade in the art world, this exhibition from Austrian artist Franz West (1947-2012) showcases some of the more playful elements which were created during his lifetime, with a retrospective which is at once irreverent and respectful.
From enormous, colourful sculptures which seem to be goading the viewer to find meaning, to sketches which were actively mocking a group of artists who rose to fame just before West himself did, the artwork on display shows that this was a creative mind with few limits and a sarcastic sense of humour.
The works on display bend and fill the space with a curiosity and a freshness which belies the age of some of the pieces, and the exhibit makes for a great introduction to his work for those visiting London and staying at the Marble Arch Hotel.
