In the 14th century, the grounds of the Charthouse saw use as a burial plot for victims of the plague. Not to be deterred, an order of monks founded a priory on the same spot and made the place their own for a couple of hundred years. After that, Charthouse became an exclusive boy’s school for the offspring of wealthy Londoners, finally ending up as an Almshouse – and it remains so today.
