Famous film locations to visit in London

London has featured prominently in a huge wealth of movies through the years, providing the backdrop to some of cinema’s greatest hits. Whether you’re a big film fan or simply want to dive into the areas of the city which have achieved true icon status, here’s our round-up of the top film locations to head for…

Houses of Parliament

Many films shot in London feature at least one ‘establishing’ shot of the Houses of Parliament, as they are a world-famous emblem of Britishness and a key symbol of the famed London skyline. From Doctor Who through to Bond films, this historic building has played a role in numerous productions. While staying at Mayfair hotels in London, be sure to head here for a quick glimpse at one of the city’s most notorious sights.

Buckingham Palace

London’s most famous palace has been featured in countless films and TV series, providing a great location for visiting film buffs. During the summer months, the state rooms are open to the public – but outside of the season you can still browse the grounds and see the daily Changing of the Guard. This is the official Royal residence of the Queen, so if you’re seeking an insight into British culture, film and history, this is a must see during your stay at the Montcalm London.

Westminster Bridge

Anyone who has seen the opening scenes of iconic British horror film 28 Days Later will remember the lead character walking across this deserted bridge. In real life, Westminster Bridge is seldom ever deserted, but instead bustling with life and activity – but if you’d like to see it up close, then be sure to head here while you visit London.

Big Ben

The list of films which have featured this famed London landmark are almost without count, but one which immediately springs to mind is Skyfall, the 2012 James Bond film. In this movie, Bond gazes out across the city skyline from the top of the building which currently houses the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and in the distance you can see he’s looking at Big Ben, as well as the nearby Ministry of Defence. While enjoying your trip to the spa in London, be sure to take the time to pass by one of the city’s most famous sights.

Platform 9 ¾

Whether you’re a Harry Potter fan or not, you’ll probably have heard of Platform 9 ¾, which is located between platforms 4 & 5 at Kings Cross station. Here you can experience a little bit of film history for yourself, visiting the wall which portrayed the famous platform in the Harry Potter franchise. There’s lots of opportunities for taking some photos, and there’s also a nearby Harry Potter Shop which has been developed to look like Ollivander’s wand shop. Harry Potter enthusiasts can also head to Leadenhall Market to see where the exterior shooting for Diagon Alley took place.
