Your Guide to the West End

When people think of the West End, they think of glitz, glamour and beautiful theatres playing host to some of the best actors in the world. And that’s a fairly accurate summation of the area.

Few places on earth – barring, perhaps, Broadway – have as many historical and prestigious theatres in one place. But the West End is also home to some famous shopping areas, which makes it the perfect place to go for a little retail therapy, and then wrap the day up by catching a great show. Below, we’ll run through some of the most famous theatres you can find and cover a couple of areas you need to visit if you’re serious about shopping.

London Palladium

As one of the grandest of all London theatres, the London Palladium is a landmark in its own right – and it’s a beautiful place as well.

The theatre dates back to 1910, with the stunning exterior going all the way back to the 19th century and the design very much takes inspiration from Victorian classical themes. London Palladium is all columns and white stone, harking back to the Roman looks that the Victorians favoured so much.

A Grade II listed building, a visit to the London Palladium is as much about soaking in the atmosphere and the feel of the place as it is taking in a show. But, there’s no shortage of quality in this regard either. The theatre hosts both classic and modern acts and shows, with October seeing both Duane Eddy gracing the stage and Dita Von Teese bringing her unique burlesque show to the theatre. And, it’s easy to reach the London Palladium from Montcalm’s many London 5 star hotels, so there’s no reason not to make the short journey.

Dominion Theatre

Less stunning externally, but plush and breath-taking on the inside, Dominion Theatre is right on Tottenham Court Road and easy to reach from your room at The Montcalm London Marble Arch.

The Dominion Theatre has played host to some of the biggest names in entertainment since it opened back in the 1920’s, with Chaplin and Judy Garland both performing at the venue. In recent years, the theatre has benefitted from a vast, £6 million renovation, helping return the classic, red velvet interior to its former glory.

Throughout October, the theatre will play host to an extended run of the ever-popular musical Bat out of Hell, so make sure you grab your tickets!

The Shopping

Both Bond Street and Oxford Street are in the West End, making it the ideal place to visit and sample some of London’s finest shopping. And they’re both only a short journey from The Montcalm London Marble Arch.

Oxford Street is home to the world-famous Selfridges department store, and it’s a place you can get lost in – in a good way – for hours. But aside from this, Oxford Street is full of well-known and boutique stores selling the latest fashion, jewellery and more.

If you’re seeking the ultimate in high-end shopping, then Bond Street is the perfect place to sate your needs. You can find stores for Dolce Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Tiffany & Co. and any other luxury brand you care to mention. If you want a special shopping experience, the West End is the place to go.
