Things to do and see at Richmond Park

London may not seem like the best holiday destination for nature lovers but the city is home to some of the most beautiful greeneries in London. The largest of them is Richmond Park which offers plenty of outdoor excitement.

Pack your favourite coat and put on your walking boots for a trip to our London Hotels. Whether you’re going solo or bringing the family, there’s plenty to see and do on a day out in Richmond Park. Here’s a look at what you can expect as you explore the grounds.

King Henry’s Mound

This famous natural landmark in Pembroke Lodge Gardens has a history that dates back hundreds of years. It is believed to be the spot where King Henry VIII stood and watched as the rocket launched signifying the execution of his ex-wife, Anne Boleyn. Unfortunately, historical records have shown that this legend isn’t actually true but the mound is still worth a look. It is now believed to have been a Bronze Age burial chamber and is a great place to take your camera. From the top of the mount, you’ll have views of the whole park.

Isabella Plantation

This hidden greenery in the heart of Richmond Park is one of the most beautiful places in London. The area spans 40 acres and is made up of woodland, open fields and water features. The Isabella Plantation was established in the early 1800s and was opened to the public in 1953. Spend the afternoon exploring the plantation and you’ll find hundreds of beautiful flowers and plants. There are also plenty of plaques and information sings that teach you more about the area.

Roaming deer

More than just a place to have a picnic, Richmond Park is a nature reserve that aims to protect the wellbeing and growth of its wildlife population. Amongst the wide selection of animals, there are around 630 deer which roam around the grounds. The reason there are so many deer roaming around the grounds is that Richmond Park was initially established by Charles I as a deer park which was used for conservation and hunting.

Events and shows

As well as offering some of the most beautiful natural scenery in London, Richmond Park also hosts regular events throughout the year. Tourists often visit the park to take part in one of the walks and explorative treks. If you’re travelling with kids, these are great ways of getting them active and helping them learn more about nature. Be sure to keep an eye on the park’s calendar and see what’s coming up.

Sports

On your trip to Richmond Park, you’ll get chance to try out all kinds of sports. There are plenty of open spaces where you can kick around a football or you could try your hand at fishing in Pen Pond. There is a golf course in the park if you’re looking to work on your handicap and there are also plenty of bikes for hire so you can get some exercise and see more of the park.
