A first-time visitor’s guide to the Tube

Travelling on the Tube can be a nerve-wracking experience for the uninitiated, but once you get the hang of this popular method of London transport, you’ll be well on your way to getting around the city with ease. Not only is the Underground super-convenient, it’s one of the most reliable transport networks globally, catering to an estimated 24 million journeys every day.

Here’s what you need to know on your first trip!

Check Travel Times

As with all transport networks, there are times when the London Underground gets pretty busy. Depending on your own comfort level, you might want to avoid the overcrowded trains during the 7:30-9:30 slot and early evenings between 17:00 and 18:30. These are particularly hectic during the weekday, as commuters rush to get to work. If you can’t avoid travelling during these hours, then simply be aware of the longer queues and likelihood for packed Tube carriages!

Stay Safe on Escalators

Even if you’re in a rush to get to your spa in London, be sure to always hold on tight to the handrail on the escalators. There are strict rules about sticking to the left-hand side, and if travelling with a pet, they must be held at all times. The last thing you want while visiting London is for an accident to ruin the trip, so look out for any safety information and always follow it to the letter for a smooth and trouble-free journey.

Tickets at the Ready

Be sure to always have your ticket or contactless payment method handy, as this will make getting through ticket barriers much faster and more streamlined. This is particularly important if you’re travelling at peak times, so you won’t feel like an awkward tourist holding up the queue behind you! Consider investing in a handy travel card case for your visit at the Montcalm Hotel, allowing you to keep everything you need safely stowed away yet easily accessible when required.

Be Aware of Line Closures

Even though the Tube is one of the more reliable transportation options in London, sometimes stations or routes will be delayed, cancelled or closed. Check online at the Transport for London website before you begin your trip, to ensure everything runs according to plan while you stay at luxury hotels in London.

Keep your Belongings Safe

As with all crowded public spaces, you need to be careful with your valuables during your journey on the London Underground. Pickpockets do operate here, so always keep your personal belongings close to you and stored away from potential thieves while you are travelling.

Ask for Help

Feeling lost or confused while navigating the Tube? Then don’t forget to ask the nearby Transport for London staff for help. They’re very knowledgeable about everything from how to read the Tube maps to pointing you in the direction of the right platform, so be sure to use this valuable resource.
