The British Museum: What’s on in August

The British Museum, often referred to as ‘The Historian’s Treasure Trove’ is a hive of historical delights. Boasting 10 curatorial and research departments, it’s the ideal place to take in London, British and world culture during the summer months. With programmes to enthral children and adults alike, here are just some of the things coming up in August at the British Museum…

Around The World in 90 Minutes

Just a few Tube stops, or a leisurely walk from the Montcalm Hotel Marble Arch, stands the magnificent British Museum. A unique way to discover what the museum has to offer is through their tours. For those who have weekends spare, a firm favourite is the ‘Around the World in 90 Minutes’ tour. It runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, and highlights the best of the plentiful exhibits the museum has to offer such as the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon ‘Elgin’ Marbles and a 2.6 thousand year old prosthetic toe.

Egyptian Collection

Of course, if you’re looking for 5 Star Hotels in London, you may be tempted to never leave your hotel room, but for those early birds hoping to brush up on their knowledge of Ancient Egypt, the British Museum offers a contemplative look at the extensive Egyptian collection, complete with statues of Pharaohs and gods, as well as sublime ancient tomb architecture. This early morning tour runs throughout the summer and touches on over 3000 years of history.

The British Museum has plenty more events to offer fans of Ancient Egypt throughout August; on Friday 10th August, Carol Andrews gives her talk ‘From queen to commoner: women in ancient Egypt’ which explores the roles women had to play in shaping Egyptian history. This is followed by George Hart on Wednesday 15th of August who offers an informative look on ‘Sarcophagi from Ancient Egypt’.

Women and LGBTQ

For those looking to discover an interesting perspective on exhibits during their stay with us at the Montcalm Hotel Marble Arch, a must-visit talk will take place on August the 4th, discussing ‘Women and LGBTQ histories’. This 45 minute tour will be given by celebrated LGBTQ historian and activist, Babs Guthrie and will include a fresh look at some of the museum’s eight million works.

Something for the kids

Inside this historic and iconic cultural hub are thousands of artefacts and activities for all ages. Families with young children up to 5 years old will be delighted to know that there’s even something for the little ones in August. Those looking for a little relief from the heat of the summer sun will love the museum’s workshop ‘Little Feet: get splashy’, which they can attend on Monday the 13th of August. Here, kids can get a hands-on learning experience about all things water.

Or perhaps your child would prefer ‘Little Feet: animal patterns’; the chance to playfully study different animals and create your own model to take home. This fun-filled event takes place on Saturday 25th of August.

For a fantastic experience for older kids and adults alike, the British Museum are offering the chance to ‘Design Your Own App’. Though spaces are limited the classes are completely free and run from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 12th August. Lead by Samsung, attendees are given the opportunity to learn how to design their own app to help the whole family explore the museum.
