This world-famous clock is one of the city’s most impressive sights, and a stunning example of Victorian architecture. Technically part of the ‘Elizabeth Tower’, this clock is known as ‘Big Ben’ in reference to the 13 tonne bell which chimes regularly throughout the day. Built in the 1850s, the clock tower’s history goes back even further than that – all the way to 1289! Construction began on the tower in its current form in 1843, and Big Ben’s current bell is actually the second to have been placed there, in 1858.
