De La Soul to play in London later this year

Influential hip-hop trio De La Soul are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and to celebrate this fact the group will be playing in London at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on May 1st.

Known for their unique wordplay and original use of sampling, De La Soul are often credited with helping to merge the boundaries between the hip-hop and indie-rock-pop markets, encouraging more cross-over between genres by appealing to listeners of various types of music.

However, the irony of their success is that because of their extensive sampling, acquiring the rights to make their music available online has been particularly tricky, which means many of the group's fans have struggled to gain access to digital versions of their songs.

To help resolve the situation, De La Soul made their entire collection available to download for free for one day on February 14th – a move that was designed not only to appease fans who had been attempting to get hold of their work, but also to introduce new people to their songs, who may not previously have heard any of the trio's output.

Formed in Long Island when the three rappers were still in high school, De La Soul has over the past two and a half decades produced some of the most iconic hip-hop albums of all time, including their 1989 debut, 3 Feet High and Rising.

If you didn't manage to download any of the group's music while it was available for free – or if you are a big fan and want to hear some of your favourite tracks performed live – then getting tickets to the upcoming show in Shepherd's Bush could be just what you need.

Given the fact that De La Soul rarely perform live these days, this is not an opportunity you'd want to pass up.
