If you’ve been watching the Winter Olympics in Sochi over the past ten days or so and fancy having a go at some of the sports you’ve seen then London is a fantastic place to come, as it’s home to some of the top ice skating rinks in the country.
With ice hockey being one of the showpiece events of the Olympics (the men’s gold medal match is the traditional final contest of the Games, bringing the curtain down on the whole affair), all eyes will be on the Bolshoi Ice Dome this weekend to see which nation bags the top prize. Figure skating, meanwhile, is another of the most spectacular sports in the Olympic line-up, and something that has been close to many Brits’ hearts ever since Torvill and Dean won gold at the 1984 Games in Sarajevo.
For those who would like to do a little more than just watch the action on TV, Alexandra Palace in north London is the perfect place to head to, as it’s home to the country’s premier ice skating facility.
Here, visitors can take advantage of a number of excellent services, with ice hockey training, figure skating classes and much more on offer.
Kids’ birthday parties can also be arranged at the rink, with special guides supervising the unique fun and games, while disco events called Ice Nation are regularly held here too.
Of course, if you’d prefer to just skate with no frills, that’s always a possibility, with public skating sessions held daily.
Elsewhere, Queen’s Ice and Bowl can be found near Queensway in west London, and offers another excellent rink. Private lessons are offered for those who would like some help with their technique, while public sessions are also available if you’d prefer to just get out on the ice and pick up the basics alone.
