Baker wins equestrian freestyle title

4th September 2012

Great Britain's Natasha Baker was overcome with emotion after winning her second gold in the London 2012 Paralympic equestrian competition.

The 22-year-old Londoner again enjoyed success in front of a home ground at Greenwich Park to win the grade II freestyle test by more than five per cent.

Baker had already won the grade II championship gold at the weekend on horse Cabral and put in yet another strong performance.

"It's absolutely fabulous. I'm so amazed. It's my personal best, and if it’s a record, that’s a bonus. I knew it was going to be good but I never imagined it was going to be a Paralympic record," explained Baker.

She added: "I never ever imagined that in my first Games in London I would come home with two gold medals. I always said when I was ten years old I wanted to go to a Paralympic Games and come home with a gold, but I never thought it would be my first Games, at a home Games, so it's incredible."

Lee Pearson was also in action in the equestrian event but he failed to win his 11th Paralympic title and had to settle for bronze in the Grade Ib freestyle dressage.

Pearson was awarded a score of 74.2 per cent on his horse Gentleman but was beaten by Austrian Pepo Puch with 79.15 per cent and Finland's Katja Karjalainen with 74.25 per cent.

However, Pearson confirmed that he would continue on his quest to better Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and swimmer Dave Roberts' medal record at the next games in Rio de Janeiro.

"I am pleased with the medals I have got," he said.

"Rio, here I come, but with a different horse."

The London 2012 Paralympics Games draw to a close on September 9th but for anyone staying in central London hotels there are still plenty of sports-related events happening across the city as well as the popular London 2012 Festival celebrating UK arts.
