Comedy Film Festival Returns

13th January 2012

Laughing movie lovers may soon be a common site in the capital with the upcoming London Comedy Film Festival at BFI Southbank.

Aiming to kick-start the next generation of British comedy film talent, the event hopes to attract visitors from around the world to book hotel accommodation in London and take in the screenings.

From January 26th to 29th, the programme will feature a range of comedy classics, such as Buster Keaton's silent films, through to modern day success stories, such as France's The Fairy.

"More than any other country, Britain has a great tradition of film comedy, from Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel and Cary Grant through to Ealing, Carry On and Monty Python, and to Sacha Baron Cohen, Richard Curtis, Simon Pegg, Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris," commented the organisers.

The festival will see a special preview of The Muppets on January 27th, alongside parties, talks and workshops, such as the School of Slapstick.

Ideal for families staying in luxury London hotels, the workshop welcomes kids aged nine to 12 years old, who will be invited to make their own silent comedy film.

While prices have yet to be revealed, those taking part will be given refreshments and a DVD of their finished film at no extra cost.

Film buffs can attend the Hero event on January 28th, where director Edgar Wright, of Shaun of the Dead fame, will introduce a double-bill of his own romantic comedy with zombies followed by Mike Leigh's Life is Sweet.

Hot on the heels of the double-bill, the Discover Screening will showcase a new British comedy feature film that is looking for distribution.

There will also be a rare screening of Go to Blazes, a classic British comedy that is celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year.

"Go To Blazes is much-loved but rarely screened, and stars a host of British acting legends including Maggie Smith, John le Mesurier, Arthur Lowe, Dennis Price, Robert Morley, Hugh Lloyd and Derek Nimmo," added organisers.
