Enjoy Folk with Attitude at the Southbank Centre

24th July 2013

The Southbank Centre has announced that next month, it'll be joining forces with London music promoters The Nest Collective to present three very special evenings of live music.

Each fortnight from August 8th, the Queen Elizabeth Hall's resplendent Roof Garden will play host to double-bills from the capital's finest purveyors of traditional music - a programme organisers have given the moniker Folk with Attitude.

Whether you're hoping to recline to soothing melodies from sweet shepherds of sound, watching the sun set on the romantic London skyline - or else let your hair down to some raucous, boot-stomping rockabilly - there should be an evening to suit your tastes. While hopefully the balmy summer weather will continue, the Southbank Centre assures guests that the gigs will go ahead come rain or shine - and recommend bringing an umbrella just in case.

The first concert kicks off with the Keston Cobblers Club, a local ensemble who claim their invigorating blend of mod and folk sounds will "heel your soles". They're followed by Pe-de-Jurema, a group whose Brazilian roots music should satisfy those with a taste for more exotic styles such as forro, maracuta and samba de roda.

On August 22nd, the Queen Elizabeth Roof Garden will be lit up by three garage rockers who hail from Switzerland and play what the Quietus describes as "psychedelic Cajun punk voodoo rockabilly dance music". Topping the bill is Jonathan Cope - a veritable one-man-band who plays and teaches didgeridoo, Jew's harp and even throat singing.

Finally, acoustic trio Three Cane Whale will visit the venue on September 5th. The evening's second act is yet to be announced, but folk fans should find Three Cane Whale a tantalising proposition in their own right - their music "bridges the gap between cinematic sweep and intimate delicacy", according to promoters.

Tickets cost £14 for each evening and can be booked via the Southbank Centre website. The venue enjoys a prominent city centre location, close to many luxury London hotels and easily accessible via public transport.
