Madness of King George comes to Apollo Theatre

19th December 2011

Theatre-loving couples on a romantic London getaways may be interested in seeing the Madness of King George at the Apollo Theatre.

Set to open to the public from January 18th to March 31st 2012, the show is helmed by Olivier Award-winning stage actor David Haig, who takes on the role of King George III.

Ideally placed for those staying in luxury London hotels, the performance of Alan Bennett's comedy comes to the Shaftesbury Avenue theatre after a successful run at the National Theatre in 1991 and a subsequent adaptation into a hit film.

According to the venue, the play is rarely performed because of its huge cast, but the new production offers a chance to enjoy the spectacle in its limited eleven week run.

"In spite of a catalogue of accomplishments - he founded the Royal Academy of Arts, was a passionate advocate of science, literature and music and fathered fifteen children - George III is best remembered today for his bouts of unbridled lunacy,"explained the venue.

"Subjected to the appallingly cruel medical treatment of the day and assailed by power struggles between politicians and his scheming son, George remains throughout an intensely sympathetic character - melancholy, moving, witty... and finally triumphant."

Critics have already praised the performances, with the Mail on Sunday awarding the "magnificent" show five stars, while the Sunday Telegraph gave the "insanley good" comedy a similarly high rating.

Founded in 1901, the Apollo Theatre has become synonymous with musical entertainment.

Those enjoying a show at the historic theatre can enjoy the split level lounge bar or upper circle bar during intermission.

Additionally, Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning play Long Day's Journey into Night will be coming to the theatre in the new year.

The performance will also mark David Suchet's return to the West End, who will be directed by Anthony Page.
