Paralympic Flame on way to London

29th August 2012

Tonight (August 29th) sees the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games with thousands expected at the Olympic Park to watch the lightening of the stadium cauldron.

Stoke Mandeville is seen as the home of the Paralympic Movement and was chosen as the start of the torch relay. The Paralympic Flame will travel 92 miles through 24 communities and be carried by 116 teams of five people on its way to the start of the Games.

All of the torch bearers have been selected via public nominations and were chosen because they represented the main values of the Paralympic movement - courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

Those carrying the flame include Katie Piper who has succeeded in raising awareness of burns survivors after suffering major injuries following an acid attack by her ex-boyfriend.

Jeremy Hunt, secretary of state for culture, Olympics, media and sport, said: "The Paralympic Games have come home to Britain - and it will be the biggest Games yet, with more athletes, more countries and more spectators than ever before.

"The talent, commitment and inspiration of the Torchbearers, and Paralympics GB, reminds us all what can be achieved when we focus on what people can do, rather than what they can't.  I know the whole country will be backing Paralympics GB throughout the next ten days of world-class sport."

Tickets are still available to those taking advantage of London hotel deals. Prices start from £10 each and are available for a number of events including the opening and closing ceremony.

One of the most popular ticket options is a special ExCel day pass which allows holders to watch all of the sports being played at the London venue - table tennis, judo, sitting volleyball, wheelchair fencing, powerlifting and boccia.
