Press Photographer's Year 2011 exhibition opens

18th July 2011

Photography lovers may soon be looking for 5 star hotels in London to attend the Press Photographer's Year 2011 exhibition at the South Bank's National Theatre.

The exhibition opens from today (July 18th) through to September 4th and showcases some of the most creative, unique and outstanding pieces of photography used in the UK media, according to the event organiser.

Featuring photographs that highlight some of the most impactful moments of last year, the Press Photographer's Year 2011 programme awards the best in photojournalism, divided into categories of news, portraits, sports, arts and entertainment.

All pieces were judged by fellow photographers with the winning images announced today, including the photograph of the year prize awarded to Charles McQuillan for Pacemaker - a shot of a girl next to her lifelike replica from a company that creates dolls for parents wishing to have a permanent reminder of theirs child's infancy.

Also on display are influential photos of public figures such as Julian Assange and David Cameron, as well as images of protests from around the world - in particular, the shocking image of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall being caught up in civil disobedience over top up university fees.

Furthermore, the exhibit will show off iconic images from the wave of pro-democracy protests and revolutions that swept across the middle east, including Egypt and Yemen, as well as the ongoing struggles in Libya and Syria.

Hosted in the Lyttelton foyer of the National Theatre, the exhibit will display 136 pictures, including 15 prize winning pieces of photojournalism.

"These have been selected to represent the extraordinary variety and the standard of entries received," explained the organisers.

The National Theatre is a short walk from Embankment and Waterloo stations, which are a 13 minute Tube ride from Marble Arch, the home station of The Montcalm Hotel.
