Travel on an art deco tube train with the London Transport Museum

28th June 2013

Thousands of journeys are made on the London Underground every day, with tourists and commuters alike enjoying the privilege of navigating the city via the world's oldest subterranean railway.

A couple of next month's trips will be particularly special, however. The tube is 150 years old this year and as part of the London Transport Museum's ongoing celebrations, a specially restored art deco train will be gracing the Northern and Piccadilly lines on July 21st.

The Art Deco Special will make just two exclusive journeys, so this is a truly rare opportunity for rail enthusiasts and history buffs to experience a trip on the London Underground as it might have been in the 1930s.

At 11:30am, the train will depart from Edgware on the Northern line, making a 90-minute circular trip via the Kennington Loop. This should give passengers plenty of time to appreciate an atmosphere that's a far cry from today's crowded commuter journeys, boasting opulent interiors and exquisite service.

In the evening, the Art Deco Special will make a second trip between Cockfosters to Ealing Broadway on the Piccadilly line. It's scheduled to depart at 5:26pm and should also take 90 minutes to complete the journey.

Tickets cost £20 and can be booked online via the London Transport Museum website. Would-be attendees are urged to book as soon as possible, as demand is likely to be high and the train's capacity is strictly limited.

If you can't get tickets in time, the museum itself is hosting plenty of ongoing festivities to commemorate the tube's anniversary. These include Poster Art 150, a major exhibition of the incredible posters that have graced Underground stations over the course of the last century.

There are plenty of luxury hotels in the London Transport Museum's immediate vicinity. It should also prove readily accessible from other quarters of the city centre, being a stone's throw from the Covent Garden, Charing Cross and Leicester Square tube stops.
