World Photography Awards exhibition opens this month

15th April 2013

April sees the Sony World Photography Awards coming to London for the third time since relocating from Cannes in 2011, and Somerset House will be holding an exhibition of works from the competition - showcasing winners alongside shortlisted entrants in all categories.

The World Photography Organisation, an international body that provides initiatives for amateur and professional photographers, established the awards in 2007. Since then, the competition has become renowned as one of the most prestigious in the world.

Somerset House's annual showcase has similarly grown in stature. This is one of London's most important photographic exhibitions, and hosts talks and debates with experts and artists alongside works that constitute "a stunning snapshot of the world in 2012".

The World Photography Awards accept submissions from both leading professionals and amateur photographers, and Somerset House's carefully curated selection of the competition's most vivid, thought-provoking and beautiful images promises to draw indiscriminately from the best entries.

With works from a vast range of fields, including reportage and current affairs, travel, fashion and portraiture, the extraordinary exhibition is a masterclass in contemporary photography and unmissable for enthusiasts.

There will also be a special display of work by the American photographer William Eggleston, who is due to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award this year. Described by the World Photography Organisation as a "pioneer of colour photography and the personal documentary style", his images of day-to-day life are iconic for their wit, beauty and composition.

The 2013 Sony World Photography Awards winners' book will contain a number of rarely-seen images by the artist, drawn from throughout his 50-year career.

Somerset House, a beautiful neoclassical building, is situated between the Strand and the Thames - a short distance from some of the finest palaces, townhouses and hotels in London.

The exhibition opens on April 26th in the building's west wing. Tickets can be purchased from the World Photography Organisation's website and cost £9, or £5 for concessions.
