Jubilee and Olympics boost London's appeal
A new survey has revealed that London is the best city in the world to visit.
The TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Destination Awards concluded that interest in the UK capital has been building since the wedding of Prince William and now the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics are helping to boost London's profile.
"To be crowned the world's best destination in the Olympic year by millions of travellers is a tremendous honour for London", said Emma Shaw, a spokesperson for TripAdvisor.
"It's fantastic to see the capital recognised and rewarded by those that have really experienced the city - travellers themselves."
London came ahead of New York and Rome in the survey and highlights the many attractions that visitors from across the UK and the world can enjoy when staying in central London hotels.
Overall, London picked up three awards - being named Best Global Destination, Best European Destination and Best UK Destination.
Gordon Innes, chief executive officer of London & Partners, commented: "This accolade couldn't be better timed for the capital in this momentous year and we are delighted that millions of travellers have voted London as the number one destination in the world, Europe and the UK."
He added: "These three awards are testament to the wonderful array of attractions, dining and accommodation that set London apart from all of these other destinations."
London & Partners is currently expecting 2012 to be a strong year for the city's tourism industry and it is estimated that the capital will welcome a total of 12.7 million overnight leisure visitors to come and stay in London during the year.
