World's hottest music acts to bring London to life in River of Music festival

23rd July 2012

Some of the world's biggest music stars are gearing up to play a festival with a difference, the difference being that several sites across London will represent a 'continent', with ticket-holders free to travel between them to enjoy a wide cross-section of global music.

Entitled the 'River of Music', the BT-sponsored festival will give both locals and those staying in central London hotels the chance to explore some lesser-seen parts of the capital while also taking in a wide variety of contemporary acts.

For instance, just across the river from trendy Chelsea, Battersea Park will represent Asia, with the likes of Clubby's In Fusion project joining the contemporary classical ensemble the Kronos Quartet in getting the crowds in the mood for the upcoming sporting celebrations.

Meanwhile, in the east of the city, the Docklands area will serve as Africa, with the likes of Nigeria's King Sunny Ade and Congo's Staff Benda Bilili performing and at the Tower of London, the Americas will be represented by bands such as Scissors Sisters and Wynton Marsalis.

Also, right in the heart of the world-famous West End, European acts including Eliza Carthy, Phamtom Limb and the All Russian Big Band will play to the crowds in Trafalgar Square and Somerset House, while over in Greenwich, the Oceania Stage will see contemporary pop and classical acts perform against the backdrop of the historic Old Royal Naval College.

The BT River of Music festival runs across Saturday and Sunday (July 21st and 22nd), with free tickets still available for both local residents and visitors staying in central London hotels over the course of the weekend.

As well as this festival of music, London is also set to host a star-studded concert for the official Olympics opening ceremony, with the likes of Duran Duran and the Stereophonics set to perform on the night.
