The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race approaching
Held every year, the famous Great Spitalfields Pancake Race in London will be taking place on the forthcoming Shrove Tuesday.
Hosted by the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, the event is organised by the Alternative Arts group and this year will be raising money for the London Air Ambulance.
Teams of four are invited to take part in the race, which involves walking along the Dray Walk as fast as possible, while holding a frying pan and flipping pancakes. Many of the competitors get in to the spirit of the event by wearing fancy dress - the more ridiculous outfit the better.
The winning team gets the honour of the title and a special engraved frying pan. There are also various prizes for the best dressed team and runners-up. Of course, everyone gets to taste some pancakes along the way as well.
Race day is March 12th and the action begins at 12.30pm so people need to turn up early to make sure they do not miss out on the chaotic shenanigans.
Entry to the event is free but teams need to register in advance via the Great Spitalfields Pancake Race website. It is also a perfect spectacle for those staying in central London hotels to come and watch.
Shrove Tuesday is a traditional Christian festival that takes part on the day before the 40 days of Lent. Many households prepare for this by using up rich ingredients such as eggs, flour, and milk to make pancakes.
