From magic realism to contemporary art with a social conscious, here’re some of our must-see art exhibitions on offer in London this month.
Chiharu Shiota: Me Somewhere Else
Blain/Southern, Mayfair – up until 19th January 2019
Blain / Southern is renowned for showcasing the talents of new and up and coming artists, and this exhibition features new work by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota who uses thread to ‘draw’ in three dimensions.
World famous for her site-specific, large-scale immersive installations that defy time and space, Shiota uses networks of yarn that vary in shape and size, but always stem from a personal experience that references themes including body, memory, life and death.
To reach Blain/Southern, you’ll need to take the Central Tube line which takes just eight minutes. However, if you’d like to walk off some of your Hankies Marble Arch breakfast before you visit, you can reach the gallery on foot in less than twenty minutes.
Electric – Lauren Baker
Box Galleries, Chelsea – Up until 31st January 2019
One of the most exciting and engaging artists in the UK, Lauren Baker works with light, and her new solo show is truly electrifying. Electric is hosted by Box Galleries, and the exhibition has been so popular that it has been extended to late January 2019 due to overwhelming demand.
Bursting with bright neon colours and energy, Baker is a master of melding colour and light with her exploding galaxies, diamond dust and magical auras, so make sure you keep a little time spare during your visit to London to experience this exhibition.

Seen & Heard: Victorian Children in the Frame
The Guildhall, London – up until 29th April 2019
Seen & Heard is a new exhibition currently being held at the Guildhall Art Gallery and features a collection of fifty Victorian paintings that take a look at the role of children in Victorian Britain. An emotive and often nostalgic exhibition, visitors can view this collection well into spring 2019.

Magic Realism: Art in Weimar Germany 191-33
Tate Modern – up until 14th July 2019
In a year-long display, the Tate Modern is showcasing the George Economou Collection, a collection of seventy paintings that uncovers the paradoxes of the Weimar era, in which liberalisation and anti-militarism flourished in tandem with political and economic uncertainty.
A must visit venue if you’re seeking some culture in London this December.
